Floating Pumpkins and Tree Vine DIY Halloween Decor

Creating a focal point!

For this year’s Halloween decor I wanted to use decorations I already had. Scrolling through Pinterest I was inspired by the witch cottage and victorian era aesthetics. This one image from Pinterest caught my attention. An image of floating pumpkins with vines on a mirror. The dark vines give a whimsical witch touch and the carved pumpkins give all the Halloween vibes. I knew I could create this in my own living room by adjusting it to the space I have. Since I do not have a table by the mirror I decided to make a tree vine.

  1. Creating the base for the tree vine:

I found a tree trunk in my backyard and asked my husband to cut it to size. I then took it into my living room and made sure it aligned at the corner of the mirror I had on my wall. Once I knew the trunk fit , I laid the trunk down to secure the trunk to a plastic plant pot. I proceeded to use a drill to screw three screws to hold up the trunk with the plastic plant pot. I then placed the small pot plant into a bigger ceramic plant pot. I placed rocks inside the pot to stabilize the trunk.

2. Putting up the vines:

I gathered all my garlands and I wrapped them around the tree trunk to create the vine aesthetic. I layered them from the most basic eucalyptus to the darker and fuller garlands. I used 8 garlands in total to create this look. In order to hang the garlands and have them overlap on the mirror I clipped the stems to a cable clip holder.

3. Carving Pumpkins:

I bought 3 small carvable pumpkins from Michael’s and 2 larger carvable pumpkins from Target. I printed out a stencil I found on line to draw out the faces I would want to draw on the pumpkins. I used tape to hold on the stencil on the pumpkins to be able to draw them out. Once I drew out all the faces on the pumpkins I used a blade to carve them out.

4. Hanging Carved Pumpkins:

Once the pumpkins were carved they were ready to be hung. I used a drill to drill a small hole on the trunk of the pumpkins. The small hole is to pass through the fish line which will be used to hang the pumpkins and create the illusion of floating pumpkins. Using the fishline is important in order to not have a visible thread or string. I tied the end of the fishline to pushpins which is what I used to hang the pumpkins from my living room’s ceiling. Last step is adding yea light battery candles. (Bought from Dollar Tree)
